Knotting Sample

  • Jul. 14th, 2008 at 5:44 PM
I did a little sampler with some knotted threads I had made on my new shuttle, and since a good few people were still wondering what you do with all those knots here are a couple of photos of some rough embroidery I did with them...

The outline of the petals are done in a single knotted thread, and the ribbon in sugar plum knots!

This one was done with a string of single knots couched close together.

Sadly I tried turning these into a headdress and failed, the good news is they didn't take too long to do and I got a few photos to share out of it all!

Do you draw it through the cloth while you're knotting it or do you knot it and then stitch it on?

I knot first, then draw the design onto the fabric and stitch down the knotted threads. I have half a tutorial done for it, just need to take some photos!

Ah, ok. :) I couldn't see the stitches.

I tried my best to hide them, if you look close at the close up image at the top you can see a few of them up there

I'm working on a bit of a tutorial which is almost done. It's really just a basic over hand knot done in different sequences, it's super easy.

Nice, I had been wondering what you did with the knots as well :D

Me too at first! I took my shuttle to England the day after I got it, then came back with a bag full of knotting and no idea what to do with it! If you go to page 9 here... http://coraginsburg.com/catalogues/2002catalogue.pdf you can see a lovely example of it being used.

I just wish I hadn't messed up the piece I tried making with them, keep trying to think of a way to rescue them into something else.

Oh I wish I could learn embroidery... I guess its too late for me to learn... the people who know best are no longer here... :(

It's never too late! Apart from a little cross stitch as I never did much embroidery, I'm only now trying to pick it up properly at 28! There are a lot of good books and sites out there filled with tutorials and information, and something like these is really easy to do. You should have a look and I bet you can embroider beautiful things in no time!

I'm curious, what made you interested in learning knotting? Fashion research? Embroidery curiosity? I'm always wondering how other crafty minds work. =)

I love your new site by the way! You have me super curious about this now as I adore your flower design. I can already think of several things I could couch this onto. ^_^

I have a bit of an 18th century obsession at the moment, and kind of eat up all the little bits of info etc i can find. I picked up a book on 18th century embroidery techniques, and it had a tiny section on knotting. It sounded kind of cool and unusual since no one does it any more, and the book said it was pretty much dead and forgotten.

After that I wanted to give it a shot since i thought it might be fun to try, I picked up a shuttle and spent a whole vacation knotting my hands off! After that I tried doing some more in depth research and now I live to knot!

I guess crafts like this make me feel a little more connected with their time?

Oh my! *chuckles* I can totally relate though, as I have done that with 16th century European studies in the past. I was poking at black work, card weaving and illumination style painting. heh

I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your knotting designs! You have me super curious as this looks like something great to do in low light while watching tv. I can't stand to just sit there; my hands must be busy doing -something-. I think the couching would look fantastic on some fall and winter themed clothing. (Or maybe it's just because I'm on a fall and winter themed kick right now. I'm sure it would be cute on other seasons too.)

I think it's great though that you've found such a new love. It does indeed make you feel more connected, plus to revive something is always a joy. =)

You can do knotting without a shuttle though, right? It's there to conveniently hold the string? The shuttles are very pretty, I can completely see it as a fashion accessory.

Man I need a new hobby like I need a hole in the head but it’s just so temping. There’s string involved! And it can tie in with so many other things I already do! *sigh* Evil temptress! Lol =)

Thank you!
I just wanted to tank you for the wonderful little tutorial about knotting you've got up there on Fancy Girl!
See, I'm making a 18th century outfit (with stays and pockethoops and everything) - and I wanted to make at least 80-90% by hand (yes, even the stays). I wanted to make a pretty stomacher with embroderies and stuff - but so far I've almost only worked with cross stitches (when I was like 10, hehe ^^;).
My mother-in-law has some old books on embrodery but I haven't had the time to look trough them yet - so I was really glad to find the link on your dA! ^^
What I like the most is that this actually was a technique that they used in the 18'th century!
So thank you! =D
